The Landscape of Domain Extensions
With custom Top Level Domains or TLDs in the 7 month objection period you might think that the end of .com websites is in sight, however the reality is quite different. At $185,000 per custom domain application and a $25,000 annual fee to retain it few can afford to even apply for one.
In the initial application period there were 1,930 applications for 1,409 domains with 230 receiving multiple applications. The most applied for domain extension was .app with 13 separate companies applying for the rights. Google spent nearly $19 million applying for 101 domains.
Even if the new domains do end up seeing widespread popularity it is unlikely they will begin to rival those currently most used. To give some idea of how the 225 million plus registered domain extensions are currently distributed we have visualised the number of registered domains that use the 10 most popular extensions. Unsurprisingly .com is in first making up around 46% of all registered domains but interesting .de in second place makes up less than 7% overall.
